Aburi Botanical Gardens from Accra: A Day Trip Worth the Drive

Aburi is 35km from Accra but feels like a different world. Cooler air, colonial-era gardens, winding hill roads. Here is how to plan a day trip from Accra to Aburi Botanical Gardens and what to know before you go.

Aburi Botanical Gardens from Accra: A Day Trip Worth the Drive

Aburi Botanical Gardens sits 35km north of Accra in the Akuapem Hills, at around 400 meters above sea level. The drive takes 45 minutes to an hour from most parts of the city, depending on traffic leaving Accra.

It is the closest proper day trip you can do from Accra. For visitors who are not up for a three-hour drive to Cape Coast, Aburi offers something very different: cooler air, a genuinely beautiful set of gardens, and a pace that feels nothing like the city you just left.

Why the drive itself is worth noting

The road up to Aburi is not a straight highway. It winds up through the Akuapem Hills on a series of switchback bends with views across the hills and the Accra plains below.

The road is manageable but it rewards a car that handles well on inclines and corners. Older vehicles with worn brakes or no air conditioning make the ascent uncomfortable. The temperature drops noticeably as you climb - which is exactly the point.

At the top, Aburi sits in a landscape that feels cooler, quieter, and genuinely calmer than Accra. The difference in temperature can be 5 to 8 degrees on a hot day.

The gardens

The Aburi Botanical Gardens were established in 1890 during the colonial period. They cover about 65 hectares and contain an enormous variety of tropical and subtropical trees, many of them over a century old.

It is not a manicured show garden. It is a working botanical research station with old-growth trees, winding paths, and a sense of history that is hard to describe. Walking under a tree that was planted 130 years ago, in the hills above Accra, is a specific kind of experience.

What to expect:

  • Entry is affordable - a few cedis for Ghanaians, slightly more for non-Ghanaians
  • The grounds are large enough to take a few hours to explore properly
  • There are shaded rest areas and a small canteen on site
  • Weekends are busier. Weekday mornings are quiet.

Have cash for the local market

The road through Aburi and the market area near the gardens has local vendors selling Ghanaian crafts, woodcarvings, kente fabric, and fresh produce. This is not a tourist trap market - these are local sellers and the prices reflect it.

Bring small denomination cedis. Bargaining is normal and friendly. The woodcarvings and kente from Aburi are genuinely well made - this is a craft region, not an airport gift shop.

Tips for the garden guides are appreciated if someone shows you around or points out notable trees and plants. 20 to 30 cedis is appropriate.

Plan for a half day or a relaxed full day

Aburi works as a half day trip - leave Accra at 9am, spend two to three hours in the gardens, have lunch up in the hills, and be back in Accra by early afternoon.

It also works as a full, slow day if you add the market, lunch at one of the small spots in town, and a drive around the hills before heading back.

Unlike Cape Coast, you do not have to leave at dawn. Aburi is close enough that a 9am departure still gives you a full morning there. That said, leaving before the Accra morning traffic builds is always the easier option.

Combining with Peduase Valley or Tetteh Quarshie Farm

If you want to extend the day, the area around Aburi has a couple of other stops worth considering.

Peduase Valley Resort sits on the way up and has a viewing area and gardens that work as a brief stop. Tetteh Quarshie Cocoa Farm, just outside Mampong, is where cocoa cultivation in Ghana began - it is a short detour and an interesting piece of history if you have the time and interest.

Your driver can cover all of this in a relaxed day without rushing.

Getting there
