Kakum National Park from Accra: What to Know Before You Go
Kakum National Park is three hours from Accra and worth every minute of it. Here is how to plan the trip, why you need to leave early, what the roads are like, and what to bring for the canopy walkway.
Kakum National Park from Accra: What to Know Before You Go
Kakum National Park sits about 200km west of Accra, roughly 30 minutes north of Cape Coast town. The drive takes three hours from the city, sometimes longer depending on where you are leaving from and how traffic is moving out of Accra.
Most people who visit Kakum pair it with Cape Coast Castle in a single full day. Done right, it works. Done wrong - leaving late, arriving at Kakum after 2pm, trying to rush the canopy walk - it does not.
The main reason people come: the canopy walkway
Kakum has a canopy walkway that runs 40 meters above the forest floor across seven bridges through the tree canopy. It is the most visited attraction in the park and one of the more unusual things you can do anywhere in Ghana.
It is not a gentle stroll. The bridges move. The height is real. If you have a genuine fear of heights, know that before you commit to it.
The walk itself takes about 45 minutes to an hour depending on the group. The views into the forest canopy and across the landscape below are worth it.
Practical things about the walkway:
- Access is through a guided group. You cannot do it alone.
- Groups leave at intervals - arrive early, join the earliest slot available
- There is a weight limit on the bridges
- Wear closed-toe shoes with grip. Not sandals.
- The walkway gets busier from mid-morning. Arriving at opening time (8am) gives you the quietest experience.
Leave Accra by 6am for a full day
If you are combining Kakum with Cape Coast Castle, which most people do, you need to be out of Accra by 6 to 6:30am.
The castle tour runs 90 minutes. Lunch in Cape Coast takes 45 minutes to an hour. The drive from Cape Coast to Kakum is 30 minutes. To get on the canopy walkway by 1:30 to 2pm and still have time to look around the park before driving back, the day has to start early.
Leaving at 9am makes this impossible. You arrive at the castle at noon, rush the tour, skip lunch, get to Kakum at 2:30pm, and find the last walkway group has already left or is just closing.
The road from Accra
The N1 coastal highway is generally well-maintained. The final sections approaching Cape Coast and the road north to Kakum vary. Some stretches are rough. There are stretches where speed bumps appear without warning and road surfaces change quickly.
A solid SUV with proper suspension handles this without incident. Older vehicles struggle more on the approach roads. If you are riding in a car that is already running hot or has soft shocks, three hours of this road in each direction adds up.
The Accra to Cape Coast private driver service covers Kakum as part of the same day trip. Your driver knows the route, handles parking at both sites, and manages timing so you are not making navigating decisions while also trying to enjoy the day.
What to bring
Water. More than you think. Ghana is hot and the forest does not cool things down as much as you expect. A full litre per person minimum for the day.
Cash. The park entrance fee runs around 80 to 100 cedis for non-Ghanaians. Tip your guide. There are often craft vendors near the entrance selling locally made items. Bring small bills. ATMs are not a reliable feature near Kakum.
Sunscreen and a hat. The drive, the castle (if you are combining), and the walk to the canopy access point all involve direct sun.
Comfortable shoes. Already said it, but worth repeating. The path from the park entrance to the canopy walkway access is not paved.
Wildlife and birds
Kakum is home to forest elephants, bongo, and a significant number of primate species, though actually seeing large mammals on a standard day visit is unlikely. What you will see and hear is birds. Over 300 species have been recorded in the park. The early morning hours are best for birding.
If seeing forest wildlife rather than just walking the canopy is your priority, an early start and the first walkway slot gives you the best chance of an encounter.
Getting back to Accra
Plan to leave Kakum by 3:30 to 4pm. The drive back to Accra can stretch with traffic entering the city in the late afternoon. Getting home before dark is more comfortable and your driver can time the return to avoid the worst of it.
