Immigration, baggage, SIM cards, currency exchange, and getting to your hotel safely. The honest first-timer's guide to landing at Accra Airport.
First Time Landing in Accra? Here's Exactly What Happens Step by Step
If you have never landed at Accra International Airport before, knowing what to expect makes a big difference. The airport is fine. Immigration is manageable. But the exit is chaotic, and being unprepared costs you time and money.
This is a straight walkthrough of what happens from the moment your wheels touch down.
The airport itself
Accra International Airport (AIA) is a mid-sized international airport right in the middle of Accra, which is unusual. Most major airports sit on the outskirts of a city. AIA sits in the Airport City area, which means you are already in Accra the moment you land. Most hotels and neighborhoods are 10 to 30 minutes away in normal traffic.
The terminal is modern enough. Air-conditioned, clearly signposted, not overwhelming. You will have no trouble navigating it.
Immigration
Follow the signs to Immigration after you deplane. For most visitors:
- Diaspora / Ghanaian passport holders: Use the Ghanaian citizens or ECOWAS line if it is available. It is usually faster.
- Foreign passport holders: Use the visitors line. Have your passport, return ticket, and where you are staying ready. The officer may ask. Most people are waved through in under two minutes.
- Visa on arrival: Ghana offers visa on arrival for some nationalities. If that applies to you, go to the visa on arrival desk before you join the immigration queue. Have USD cash for the fee.
Wait times at immigration depend entirely on how many flights have landed at once. At off-peak times (midday, late morning), it can take five minutes. On Friday evenings or around Ghanaian public holidays, it can take 45 minutes.
Baggage
Baggage claim is straightforward. The carousels are labeled. Your belt number is usually displayed on a screen near the baggage hall entrance.
Trolleys are available and free. Take one if you have more than one bag.
If your bag does not arrive, go to the airline's baggage desk before you exit arrivals. Every major airline has a representative in the baggage hall.
SIM cards
Get a SIM card before you leave the airport if you do not already have one sorted. There are Vodafone Ghana and MTN booths in the arrivals area. Both work well in Accra.
You will need your passport to register a SIM. Bring it out before you join the queue at the booth. The process takes about five minutes. Buy a data bundle at the same time rather than trying to figure it out later.
Having mobile data before you exit arrivals matters. You will need it for Uber or Bolt if that is your transport plan, and for navigating to wherever you are going.
Money exchange
There are forex bureaus and ATMs inside the terminal. The rates inside the airport are slightly worse than you will find in the city, but not dramatically so.
If you need cedis for your first day, exchange a small amount inside the airport. You can get better rates at forex bureaus in Osu, Labone, or East Legon later.
If you are paying in USD for your transport (which many pre-booked services accept), you may not need cedis immediately.
Exiting arrivals: the important part
This is where first-timers get caught out.
When you walk through the arrivals exit, you will be immediately approached by taxi drivers, fixers, and people offering to carry your bags or sort you a car. Some are airport-registered drivers. Some are not. All of them are persistent.
A few things to know:
Do not agree to a price at the exit door. Step past the crowd first. If you are taking an informal taxi, walk to the designated taxi area and negotiate there. Agreeing at the door puts you at a disadvantage.
If you have a pre-booked transfer, your driver will be holding a sign with your name inside the arrivals hall, just before the exit. Look for it before you walk out. If you miss it, do not panic. Most drivers will also text or call you when you land.
If you are using Uber or Bolt, open the app before you exit and request the ride from inside. Wait until you have a confirmed driver and plate number before walking out. The designated rideshare pickup point is to the left of the exit.
Getting out of the airport: your options compared
| Option | Price range | What to expect | |---|---|---| | Pre-booked private transfer | From $50 flat | Driver waiting with name sign, tracked flight, no negotiation | | Uber / Bolt | $10 to $25 | Works well if you have data, drivers occasionally cancel | | Airport taxi (metered) | $15 to $40 | Official taxis, negotiate at the designated area | | Informal taxi (exit touts) | Variable | Avoid if possible, no accountability |
Traffic timing
Accra's traffic is real. If you land between 7am and 9am or between 4pm and 7pm on a weekday, your journey into the city will take longer than the distance suggests.
The roads immediately around the airport, including the stretch toward Spintex and East Legon, and the turn toward Cantonments and Osu, are the worst bottlenecks.
If you have a meeting or connection to make, factor this in. A 10km journey to a hotel in Cantonments can take 20 minutes or 75 minutes depending on when you leave.
One thing worth doing before you fly
Pre-booking your transfer from the airport removes the single most stressful part of arriving in a new city. You land, clear immigration, collect your bags, walk out, and find your name. That's it. No negotiating, no app issues, no waiting.
Book your airport transfer from $50 and have it confirmed before you board your flight home.
