Yellow Fever Card for Ghana: What You Need, Where to Get It, and What Happens If You Don't Have It
Forgetting your yellow fever card is one of the most common and most avoidable mistakes diaspora visitors make when traveling to Ghana. Ghana requires proof of yellow fever vaccination for entry, and Kotoka International Airport enforces it. This guide tells you exactly what you need, how to get it, and what happens if you do not have it.
What is the yellow fever card?
The yellow fever card is officially called the International Certificate of Vaccination or Prophylaxis (ICVP). It is a small yellow booklet issued by a certified travel health clinic or approved healthcare provider when you receive the yellow fever vaccine. It is recognized worldwide as proof that you have been vaccinated.
The card contains your name, date of birth, the date you received the vaccine, the vaccine batch number, and the official stamp of the clinic that administered it.
Ghana does not accept a photo of the card, a digital copy, or a doctor's letter in place of the physical card. Bring the original.
Do I need it even if I grew up in Ghana?
Yes. The requirement applies to all travelers arriving in Ghana from certain countries, including the United States, United Kingdom, and Canada, regardless of nationality or whether you were born in Ghana. If you are traveling on a US passport from the US, you need the card.
How long does the vaccine last?
The yellow fever vaccine provides lifelong immunity. As of 2016, the World Health Organization updated its guidance to state that a single dose is sufficient for life, and booster shots are no longer required. Your card does not expire.
If you were vaccinated before 2016 and your card has an expiry date written on it, it is still valid. The underlying immunity does not expire even if the card shows a date.
Where to get the yellow fever vaccine in the US
You must get the vaccine from a certified yellow fever vaccination center. Not all clinics or pharmacies can administer it or issue the official card.
Where to look:
- Travel health clinics (Passport Health, Traveler's Medical Service)
- Some county health departments
- Some university health centers
- The CDC's searchable database of authorized yellow fever vaccination centers at cdc.gov
The vaccine costs between $150 and $250 in the US depending on the clinic. Insurance rarely covers it for travel purposes.
Book your appointment at least 10 days before travel. The vaccine needs time to take effect, and many clinics have limited appointment availability.
What to do if you were vaccinated but lost your card
Contact the clinic where you received the vaccine. If they have records, they can issue a replacement certificate. If records are unavailable, you may need to be revaccinated. Do not travel to Ghana without the card.
What happens at Accra Airport if you do not have it
Ghana takes this seriously. When you arrive at Kotoka International Airport, you go through immigration and then a health screening check. Officers check for your yellow fever card at this point.
If you do not have it, you have a few possible outcomes:
Option 1: You are directed to the airport medical team and given the vaccine on the spot. This is not free and happens on their terms, not yours.
Option 2: You are held for an extended period while the situation is resolved. This can mean missing your onward travel, losing hours, or paying fees you did not plan for.
Option 3: In some cases, travelers have reported being able to move things along with a payment to the right person. We are not recommending this. We are telling you what people say happens so you understand the stakes.
The simple version: bring the card. It takes one clinic appointment to sort before you travel. It is not worth the risk or the stress.
Pack it with your passport
The easiest habit is to keep your yellow fever card inside your passport or with your travel documents every time you travel internationally. That way it is never somewhere you did not pack it.
Other health requirements for Ghana
Yellow fever is the only mandatory vaccination for entry from the US. However, travel health clinics also recommend staying up to date on:
- Hepatitis A and B
- Typhoid
- Malaria prophylaxis (Ghana is a malaria zone, particularly outside Accra)
- Routine vaccinations (measles, tetanus, etc.)
Talk to a travel health clinic or your doctor at least 4 to 6 weeks before travel for personalized advice.
What else to sort before you travel
The yellow fever card is one of two things that catch first-timers at Accra Airport. The other is not having a plan for getting out of the airport without being overcharged.
