Yellow Fever Card for Ghana 2026: Cost, Process, and What Happens at Accra Airport Without One

Ghana denies entry at Kotoka Airport without a yellow fever card. What it costs (~$175 in the US), where to get it fast, and what actually happens if you forget.

Yellow Fever Card for Ghana: What You Need, Where to Get It, and What Happens If You Don't Have It

Forgetting your yellow fever card is one of the most common and most avoidable mistakes diaspora visitors make when traveling to Ghana. Ghana requires proof of yellow fever vaccination for entry, and Kotoka International Airport enforces it. This guide tells you exactly what you need, how to get it, and what happens if you do not have it.

Quick answer: how much does the yellow fever card cost?

  • United States: $150–$250 for the vaccine, depending on the clinic. Travel health clinic chains like Passport Health charge toward the higher end. Some county health departments and university student health centers are cheaper when they stock it.
  • United Kingdom: £60–£90 for the vaccine. Boots travel clinics, MASTA, and private GP travel clinics all administer it. The NHS rarely covers yellow fever specifically because it is a travel vaccine, so most people pay privately.
  • Ghana: approximately GHS 240 (~$15 USD) at Ridge Hospital in Accra. This is the vaccine plus the official ICVP booklet. Ghanaians and long-stay expats get it here routinely.
  • Insurance: rarely covers yellow fever for travel purposes in the US or UK. Budget for it as a trip cost.

The card itself never expires. A single dose is lifetime coverage per WHO guidance since 2016.

What is the yellow fever card?

The yellow fever card is officially called the International Certificate of Vaccination or Prophylaxis (ICVP). It is a small yellow booklet issued by a certified travel health clinic or approved healthcare provider when you receive the yellow fever vaccine. It is recognized worldwide as proof that you have been vaccinated.

The card contains your name, date of birth, the date you received the vaccine, the vaccine batch number, and the official stamp of the clinic that administered it.

Ghana does not accept a photo of the card, a digital copy, or a doctor's letter in place of the physical card. Bring the original.

Do I need it even if I grew up in Ghana?

Yes. The requirement applies to all travelers arriving in Ghana from certain countries, including the United States, United Kingdom, and Canada, regardless of nationality or whether you were born in Ghana. If you are traveling on a US passport from the US, you need the card.

How long does the vaccine last?

The yellow fever vaccine provides lifelong immunity. As of 2016, the World Health Organization updated its guidance to state that a single dose is sufficient for life, and booster shots are no longer required. Your card does not expire.

If you were vaccinated before 2016 and your card has an expiry date written on it, it is still valid. The underlying immunity does not expire even if the card shows a date.

Where to get the yellow fever vaccine in the US

You must get the vaccine from a certified yellow fever vaccination center. Not all clinics or pharmacies can administer it or issue the official card.

Where to look:

  • Travel health clinics (Passport Health, Traveler's Medical Service, CVS Travel Clinic)
  • Some county health departments
  • Some university health centers
  • The CDC's searchable database of authorized yellow fever vaccination centers at cdc.gov

The vaccine costs between $150 and $250 in the US depending on the clinic. Insurance rarely covers it for travel purposes.

Book your appointment at least 10 days before travel. The vaccine needs time to take effect, and many clinics have limited appointment availability.

Where to get the yellow fever vaccine in the UK

The UK has a more established network of travel clinics than the US, and pricing is generally tighter.

Where to look:

  • Boots Travel Health (nationwide, by appointment)
  • MASTA Travel Clinics (over 150 locations)
  • Nomad Travel Stores (London, Bristol, Manchester and others)
  • NHS travel clinics - some GP surgeries offer it, but availability varies and it is usually not NHS-funded for travel
  • Private travel clinics in most major cities

Expect to pay £60–£90 for the vaccine plus the ICVP card. Some clinics charge a small consultation fee on top.

Book at least 10 days before travel. Boots and MASTA typically have appointments within a week, but peak travel seasons (spring for Detty December planning, summer for Easter visits) fill up.

Where to get the yellow fever vaccine in Ghana

If you are a Ghanaian resident, a returning diaspora visitor staying for a while, or an expat already in the country, you can get the vaccine at government-approved centers in Accra. It is significantly cheaper than in the US or UK.

Where to look:

  • Ridge Hospital, Accra - the main government yellow fever vaccination center. Approximately GHS 240 including the ICVP card.
  • Port Health Clinic, Kotoka International Airport - for travelers
  • 37 Military Hospital - offers the vaccine by appointment
  • Private travel clinics in Accra - higher cost, similar standards

The vaccine supply can occasionally be disrupted at government centers. Call ahead before you travel across the city.

What to do if you were vaccinated but lost your card

Contact the clinic where you received the vaccine. If they have records, they can issue a replacement certificate. If records are unavailable, you may need to be revaccinated. Do not travel to Ghana without the card.

What happens at Accra Airport if you do not have it

Ghana takes this seriously. When you arrive at Kotoka International Airport, you go through immigration and then a health screening check. Officers check for your yellow fever card at this point.

If you do not have it, you have a few possible outcomes:

Option 1: You are directed to the airport medical team and given the vaccine on the spot. This is not free and happens on their terms, not yours.

Option 2: You are held for an extended period while the situation is resolved. This can mean missing your onward travel, losing hours, or paying fees you did not plan for.

Option 3: In some cases, travelers have reported being able to move things along with a payment to the right person. We are not recommending this. We are telling you what people say happens so you understand the stakes.

The simple version: bring the card. It takes one clinic appointment to sort before you travel. It is not worth the risk or the stress.

Pack it with your passport

The easiest habit is to keep your yellow fever card inside your passport or with your travel documents every time you travel internationally. That way it is never somewhere you did not pack it.

Other health requirements for Ghana

Yellow fever is the only mandatory vaccination for entry from the US. However, travel health clinics also recommend staying up to date on:

  • Hepatitis A and B
  • Typhoid
  • Malaria prophylaxis (Ghana is a malaria zone, particularly outside Accra)
  • Routine vaccinations (measles, tetanus, etc.)

Talk to a travel health clinic or your doctor at least 4 to 6 weeks before travel for personalized advice.

Frequently asked questions about the yellow fever card for Ghana

Do I need a yellow fever card for Ghana if I am transiting through another country? Yes, if you are arriving in Ghana from any country where yellow fever is considered a risk, or if you spent more than 12 hours in one of those countries in transit. The US and UK are not yellow fever risk countries, but a layover in certain African or South American countries can trigger the requirement even if you were not planning to enter those countries.

Is the yellow fever vaccine safe? For most adults it is safe. Serious side effects are rare. The vaccine is a live attenuated vaccine, so it is not recommended for people with weakened immune systems, infants under 9 months, or pregnant women except in specific circumstances. Talk to your doctor if any of these apply.

Can I show a photo or digital copy of my yellow fever card at Accra Airport? No. Kotoka International Airport requires the physical ICVP booklet. Photos, scans, and digital copies are not accepted at the health screening.

What if I got the yellow fever vaccine years ago but never got a card? You need the physical ICVP card to enter Ghana. If your vaccination is documented in your medical records, contact the clinic or provider that administered it and ask them to issue the official card. If records are unavailable you may need to be revaccinated and reissued a new card.

How long does the yellow fever vaccine take to become effective? The vaccine needs approximately 10 days to provide full immunity. Ghana technically accepts the card from the day of vaccination for entry purposes, but any clinic will advise you to get vaccinated at least 10 days before travel for actual medical protection.

Can children travel to Ghana without the yellow fever card? Children over 9 months of age require the vaccine and card. Infants under 9 months are not vaccinated because the vaccine is not recommended for that age group; they are typically exempted from the requirement on entry. Bring proof of age.

What else is required to enter Ghana besides the yellow fever card? A valid passport with at least 6 months remaining, a Ghana visa (Americans, Brits, and Canadians all need one - see our Ghana visa guide for Americans), and proof of onward travel. Some officers ask for accommodation details.

What else to sort before you travel

The yellow fever card is one of two things that catch first-timers at Accra Airport. The other is not having a plan for getting out of the airport without being overcharged.
