Ghana Visa for Americans in 2026: Everything You Need Before You Book
If you are a US citizen planning a trip to Ghana, you need a visa before you travel. Ghana does not offer visa-free entry to American passport holders. This guide covers everything you need to know about getting one, how much it costs, and the other entry requirements that catch people out every year.
Do Americans need a visa for Ghana?
Yes. US citizens require a visa to enter Ghana. You must obtain it before you travel. Ghana does not currently offer a standard visa on arrival for American passport holders outside of specific promotional periods like the December diaspora window.
Exception: During the Detty December period (roughly December 1 to January 15), Ghana has historically offered visa on arrival for diaspora visitors at Kotoka International Airport. This policy is announced each year, usually in October or November. Do not count on it. Apply in advance.
Types of Ghana visa for US citizens
Tourist visa (single entry): Valid for up to 60 days. Cost is approximately $100 to $120 depending on processing method.
Multiple entry visa: Valid for multiple entries over a set period. Cost is approximately $200 to $280.
Extended stay: If you plan to stay longer than 60 days, you will need to apply for an extension through the Ghana Immigration Service after arrival.
How to apply
Option 1: Ghana Embassy in Washington DC Apply in person or by mail. Processing takes 3 to 5 business days standard, 1 to 2 days express. Bring or mail your passport, completed application form, passport photos, proof of onward travel, and payment.
Option 2: Ghana Consulate in New York Covers applicants in New York, New Jersey, and Connecticut. Same process as the Washington embassy.
Option 3: Visa agency Services like VisaHQ handle the application on your behalf. Expect to pay $50 to $80 on top of the visa fee for this convenience. Worth it if you are short on time or not near an embassy.
Apply at least 4 to 6 weeks before your travel date to avoid stress. Processing times can extend during peak periods.
What you need to apply
- Valid US passport (at least 6 months validity beyond your travel dates)
- Completed visa application form
- Two recent passport photos
- Proof of yellow fever vaccination (more on this below)
- Proof of onward travel or return flight
- Hotel booking or invitation letter
- Payment of visa fee
The yellow fever card: do not forget it
This is not optional. Ghana requires proof of yellow fever vaccination for all travelers arriving from certain countries, including the United States. You need to show your yellow fever vaccination certificate (the yellow card) at immigration. No card, no entry, or a very difficult conversation.
If you do not have a yellow fever vaccine, get one at least 10 days before travel. It is available at most travel health clinics and some pharmacies in the US. Bring the physical yellow card, not just a photo of it.

Ghana's Right of Abode for African Americans
If you have African heritage and want to stay in Ghana long-term, Ghana offers the Right of Abode, which grants African Americans and other members of the diaspora indefinite residency rights. This is separate from a tourist visa and requires a separate application through the Ghana Immigration Service.
At the airport
When you land at Kotoka International Airport in Accra, you will go through immigration. Have the following ready:
- Your passport with visa
- Your yellow fever card
- Your return flight confirmation
- Address of where you are staying
Immigration officers are generally straightforward. The process takes 20 to 45 minutes depending on how busy the airport is. Have your documents organized and accessible.
After you clear immigration
Once you are through, you will collect your bags, clear customs, and exit into the arrivals hall. Read our full guide on what to expect when you land at Accra Airport for the first time before you travel.
If you have a pre-booked transfer, your driver will be waiting with a sign. If not, the first few minutes outside arrivals can be chaotic. Touts will approach you offering rides and currency exchange. Walk past them and use a ride-hailing app or a pre-arranged service.
