Cape Coast is the most significant historical destination in Ghana, and possibly one of the most significant in West Africa. That is not a marketing sentence. The castle on the seafront in Cape Coast was one of the largest holding points for enslaved Africans during the transatlantic trade. Millions passed through it. The Door of No Return opens onto the Atlantic. You stand in the dungeons and understand something about what happened there that no textbook communicates cleanly.
The guided tour is 90 minutes. Book it at the castle entrance. It is not optional if you want to understand what you're looking at. Take the tour seriously.
The Drive from Accra
The route west on the N1 runs through Kasoa, which is where most of the traffic happens. Kasoa on a weekday morning can add 30 to 45 minutes to the journey. Leave Accra by 6am and you beat most of it. Leave at 9am and Kasoa will test your patience.
After Kasoa the road clears and the drive to Cape Coast is straightforward. You pass through Winneba, Saltpond, and Mankessim before arriving on the coastal road that drops you into Cape Coast town. Total drive time from central Accra, depending on when you leave, is between 2.5 and 3.5 hours.
What to Do Once You're There
Cape Coast Castle takes the morning. After the tour, there are a handful of decent places to eat in the town. Baobab House restaurant near the castle is reliable and the terrace overlooks the water.
Kakum National Park is 30km north of Cape Coast, about 35 minutes up a good road. The canopy walk is the main draw: a series of suspension bridges 30 metres above the forest floor, 330 metres in total. The walk is guided and takes 45 minutes. Go in the morning when the forest is cooler and the birds are active.
Combining both in one day is doable if you leave Accra early and move efficiently. If you want more time at either site, staying overnight in Cape Coast is easy. There are several good guesthouses in the old town.
