The drive from Accra to Cape Coast takes between 2.5 and 3.5 hours depending on traffic and which route you take. Your driver knows both.
Cape Coast Castle was built by Europeans in the 17th century and used as a holding point during the transatlantic slave trade. The guided tour is approximately 90 minutes. It is not a comfortable visit. It is an important one.
Kakum National Park is 20 minutes from the castle. The canopy walk - a series of suspension bridges through the rainforest treetops - is unusual and worth doing. Go early for the best weather.
Combining Cape Coast and Kakum is a long but doable day trip if you leave Accra by 6–7am. If you want to take your time, consider an overnight in Cape Coast.
