Car Rental in Accra - What It Actually Costs in 2026
Car rental in Accra costs between $50 and $250 a day depending on the vehicle and how long you need it. The number you are quoted online is frequently not the number you pay. This page lists the real rates, explains where the extra charges come from, and covers why almost every rental in Accra comes with a driver.
Airport transfer $50 | Half day $60 | Full day $120 | Executive $140 | 10 seat van $700
- Vehicle and driver in one flat rate
- Fuel included, no surcharge
- Onboard WiFi and bottled water
- Fixed price confirmed before booking
- No mileage traps
- No deposit held against the car
Car rental in Accra works differently to car rental in the US, the UK, or Europe, and the difference catches most first-time visitors out. Understanding it before you book saves both money and a fairly specific kind of frustration.
What Car Rental in Accra Costs
These are our published rates. Every one is flat and all-inclusive - the vehicle, the driver, the fuel, WiFi, and water are all in the number.
- Airport transfer - $50. One way to or from Kotoka International Airport, any hour.
- Half day - $60. Up to 5 hours and 50km inside Accra.
- Full day - $120. Up to 10 hours and 100km, which covers most of Greater Accra.
- Executive full day - $140. The same terms in a Deepal S7.
- Weekly - $120 a day. Multi day and weekly hire at the standard daily rate.
- 10 seat van - $700 a day. A Mercedes Sprinter for groups.
- Day trips - $150 to $250. Aburi $150, Akosombo and Boti Falls $180 each, Cape Coast and Elmina $250.
Additional kilometres past the included allowance are charged at a fixed per-km rate that is disclosed before you book, not discovered afterwards.
Why Almost Every Car Rental in Accra Includes a Driver
Visitors often search for self drive car rental in Accra and find very little. That is not an accident.
Self drive exists in Ghana but it is uncommon, expensive to insure, and usually requires a substantial deposit held against the vehicle, sometimes $500 to $1,000. Insurance terms are restrictive and the excess is high. On top of that, Accra driving is genuinely demanding: unmarked lanes, heavy and unpredictable traffic on the N1 and the Spintex road, informal right of way conventions, and street naming that navigation apps handle inconsistently.
Most companies, including us, hire the car and the driver together. One flat rate, one booking, and someone who knows which routes seize up at which hours. We do not offer self drive.
Where the Extra Charges Come From
The advertised base price in the Accra market is often not the final price. The gap usually comes from a predictable set of additions:
- Fuel. Frequently excluded, then billed at the end or handed to you as a "return it full" obligation with no fuel card.
- Mileage caps. A low daily allowance with a per-km charge past it that is not shown at the point of quoting.
- Driver allowance. A separate daily fee for the driver on top of the vehicle rate, and sometimes a meal allowance on day trips.
- Overtime. Charged by the hour past a limit that was never clearly stated.
- Airport surcharge. An additional fee for pickups at Kotoka, applied on arrival.
- Weekend and holiday pricing. Particularly through December, when demand in Accra spikes hard.
Our rates include fuel, the driver, and the stated allowance. The per-km rate past the allowance is published before booking. There is no airport surcharge and no seasonal markup.
Which Option Fits Your Trip
Arriving and leaving only. Two airport transfers at $50 each. There is no reason to hold a vehicle for the days in between if you are not moving much.
Meetings or errands across town. A half day at $60 covers 5 hours and most of a working morning. A full day at $120 makes sense from about four stops upward, at which point it beats stacking individual rideshare trips that may or may not arrive.
A week in Accra with family. Weekly hire at $120 a day, same vehicle and ideally the same driver throughout, so you are not re-explaining where you are going every morning.
A group. The Sprinter at $700 a day seats 10 and removes the two-vehicle problem entirely.
Going outside the city. Day trips are priced as a single number covering the round trip, the driver for the full day, the fuel, and the waiting time while you are at the site. Park entry and local guides are paid on the day, because those rates are set locally and we will not mark them up.
The Vehicle
Standard bookings are in a 2025 BYD Song Plus SUV - air conditioning, panoramic roof, onboard WiFi, wireless charging, seats 5. The executive tier is a Deepal S7. Group bookings are in a Mercedes Sprinter.
These are current model year vehicles, not cars that were new five years ago and are still being advertised on the photographs from then.
