Most visitors to Ghana go to Cape Coast and Kakum, which makes complete sense, but it also means Shai Hills stays quietly undervisited by the people who would enjoy it most. It's 45 minutes east of Accra on the Akosombo road. You drive out through Tema, the landscape opens up, and suddenly you're in open savannah with granite inselbergs rising out of the flat bush. It looks nothing like Accra and nothing like the coast.
What's in the Reserve
The olive baboons are the most reliably visible animals. They move in troops and they're not shy. Kob antelope are common in the early morning. Ostriches are present and occasionally spotted near the waterhole areas. On a good morning with an early start, you might also see hartebeest or warthog. Forest elephants are in the reserve but sightings are rare and unpredictable.
The Shai Caves are carved into the hillside and were used as shelters and ritual sites by the Shai people who lived in the hills before being displaced during the 18th century. The caves are only accessible with a guide, which is arranged at the entrance. Budget an hour for the cave circuit.
When to Go
First thing in the morning, without question. The animals are active, the temperature is manageable, and the light is good for photographs. By 11am the savannah heat builds and the wildlife retreats to shade. If you leave Accra by 6am you'll arrive at the park gates by 6:45am and have the best two hours of the reserve to yourself.
Avoid weekend afternoons. Local groups come for the baboon watching and it gets loud.
Practical Details
Entrance fees are paid at the gate in cedis, both for the reserve itself and the guided cave walk. Bring water, hat, and shoes you don't mind getting dusty. The terrain is rocky in places. There is a basic refreshment stand at the gate but don't rely on it for anything substantial.
The drive from Accra follows the Tema Motorway east. It's a clean highway and your driver knows it well.
