The Aburi Botanical Gardens were established in 1890 and sit at 400 metres above sea level in the Akuapem Hills. The altitude means the temperature is noticeably cooler than Accra - even in the dry season, it's a relief.
The gardens themselves cover over 60 hectares. Giant mahogany trees, palms, fruit trees, and a wide variety of tropical plants make it genuinely worth the visit rather than just the drive.
The Afadua Hotel within the gardens is a good spot for lunch. The food is fine, the setting is excellent.
Aburi town itself is worth a short stop - the craft market and the views back down toward Accra are good.
This is a half-day trip easily, or a relaxed full day if you take your time. Your driver knows the road up the hill well.
