5 Mistakes Americans Make When Visiting Accra in 2026

If you are American and heading to Ghana in 2026, you are probably about to make at least one of these mistakes. Yellow fever cards, airport forex, US roaming, cheap rides, and more.

5 Mistakes Americans Make When Visiting Accra in 2026

First-time and returning visitors to Accra tend to hit the same walls. Not because the information is hard to find, but because nobody tells you the specific details that actually matter until you are already standing in the airport dealing with the consequences.

Here are the five we see most often.

1. Skipping the Yellow Fever Vaccination

Ghana enforces yellow fever vaccination requirements at the border. This is not a recommendation. It is a condition of entry. The International Certificate of Vaccination (the yellow card) must be presented on arrival. Without it, you face delays at the health checkpoint that can stretch your airport experience significantly, or worse.

The vaccine itself is widely available in the US. Passport Health clinics operate in most major cities. CVS and Walgreens MinuteClinics in select locations also administer it. The cost typically runs between $150 and $250, and the certificate is valid for life after a single dose.

Book your appointment at least four to six weeks before travel. Some clinics have limited availability and the vaccine takes time to take effect.

2. Exchanging All Your Cash at the Airport

The forex bureaus inside and directly outside Accra International Airport operate on captive audience pricing. The spread between what you get there versus what you get at a bureau in the city can be significant, sometimes 12 to 15 percent difference on the same transaction.

The practical approach: convert a small amount at the airport to cover your immediate costs - transport to your accommodation, something to eat, a local SIM card. Once you are settled in the city, find a licensed forex bureau in Osu, Airport Residential Area, or Labone for the remainder of your cash. The rates are materially better and the transaction is just as straightforward.

Avoid exchanging with individuals who approach you in the street regardless of the rate they offer.

3. Judging Accra's Food Scene by Its Instagram Presence

Accra has developed a strong hospitality sector over the past decade and many of its newer restaurants are genuinely good. But the places with the most social media visibility are not always the places with the best food. A significant portion of what gets photographed and tagged is priced and designed for the experience, not the plate.

The food that makes people want to come back to Ghana - the waakye, the kelewele from the right roadside seller, the jollof at a proper chop bar, the fresh tilapia at a beach spot - is almost never in a building with a neon sign and a waiting list.

Ask your driver where they eat. Ask a local contact. The best food recommendations in Accra travel by word of mouth, not hashtag.

4. Depending on a US Carrier for Data

International roaming plans from US carriers work in Ghana, but the real-world experience is inconsistent. Coverage in built-up areas is generally functional but speeds are often too slow for navigation apps to work reliably, video calls drop frequently, and the per-day cost adds up over a week-long trip.

A local SIM is the straightforward solution. MTN and Vodafone Ghana both sell SIMs at the airport arrivals area and at shops throughout the city. A data bundle sufficient for a week of active phone use costs a fraction of what a US roaming plan charges per day. Your phone needs to be unlocked to use a local SIM.

If unlocking your phone is not practical, a portable MiFi device running on a local data plan is a clean alternative. Several vendors near the airport terminal sell and sometimes rent them.

5. Booking the Cheapest Available Car

Transport decisions in Accra have downstream consequences that are not obvious when you are comparing prices online. Older vehicles in a city with significant traffic and road conditions that vary considerably are a reliability risk. Air conditioning failures, mechanical issues, and drivers who are not vetted create situations that are at best inconvenient and at worst genuinely disruptive to your plans.

Transparent Rentals was built specifically to remove this variable. Every booking is in a brand new 2025 BYD Song Plus SUV, not a vehicle that was new several years ago but a current model maintained to a high standard. Drivers are professional, the pricing is fixed before you book, and onboard WiFi means your connectivity does not depend on whether your local SIM has signal.

Airport transfers start from $50. Half day hire from $60. Full day from $120. All-inclusive, no add-ons at the end.
