Elmina is 15km west of Cape Coast and most people who go to one end up going to both, but Elmina deserves to be treated as a destination in its own right rather than an add-on. It is the oldest European building in sub-Saharan Africa. The Portuguese built it in 1482. It predates the wider transatlantic slave trade and was originally a trading post for gold and later for spices, ivory, and then, as the economics of the Atlantic world shifted, for people. The sheer age of the structure is disorienting when you're standing inside it.
Elmina vs. Cape Coast Castle
People who visit both consistently say Elmina hits harder. Cape Coast Castle is larger and more well-known, partly because of the diaspora reconnection tourism that has centred on it since the Year of Return in 2019. But Elmina is older, the setting is more dramatic, and the town around it feels less managed for tourism, which gives the whole experience a rawness that is harder to achieve in Cape Coast.
The fishing harbour outside the castle walls is one of the most striking sights on the Ghanaian coast. Hundreds of painted wooden boats, fishermen working the nets, the castle rising out of the headland behind them. Spend time there before or after the castle tour.
The Town of Elmina
The old town is genuinely worth walking. There are canoe carvers on the waterfront, a Dutch cemetery that most visitors walk past without noticing, and a general atmosphere of a town that has been on the coast for five centuries and knows it. Take an hour to walk the old town after the castle.
Practical Details
The guided tour of Elmina Castle is the only way to access the dungeons and the upper rooms. Budget 90 to 120 minutes. Tours are run by Ghana Museums and Monuments Board staff who know the history well. The drive from Accra to Elmina follows the same route as Cape Coast: west on the N1 through Kasoa and along the coast. Leave Accra by 6am to beat Kasoa traffic.
If you are combining Elmina and Cape Coast in one day, do Kakum first if you want the morning light for the canopy walk, then Cape Coast Castle in the late morning, then Elmina in the afternoon before heading back.
