Accra to Akosombo Day Trip with a Private Driver

The drive out to Akosombo is one of the better ones in southern Ghana. Once you clear the Tema motorway and turn up through Somanya, the landscape changes: hills, palm, and eventually the Volta opening out below the Adome bridge at Atimpoku.

It is about 100 km, which sounds short and takes about two hours, because the road through Somanya is not fast and you will not want it to be.

What There Is to See

The Akosombo Dam itself is the anchor. Built in the 1960s, it created Lake Volta and still supplies a large share of the country's electricity. Viewing arrangements at the dam vary and access is controlled by the Volta River Authority, so this is worth confirming close to your date rather than assuming.

Beyond the dam, the river is the attraction. Boat cruises operate from the Akosombo side, ranging from short river runs to longer afternoon cruises with food aboard. The Volta Hotel above the dam has the view that appears in most photographs of the area, and is a reasonable lunch stop whether or not you are staying.

The Tilapia at Atimpoku

Ask anyone who does this drive regularly and they will mention Atimpoku before they mention the dam. The stretch of road by the Adome bridge is lined with sellers doing grilled tilapia and one man bread, and it is genuinely good. Most of our drivers will suggest stopping here on the way back rather than on the way out, when you are not trying to hold a schedule.

Timing the Day

Leaving Accra by 7am gets you past Tema before the worst of it and to Akosombo mid morning. That leaves the whole middle of the day at the lake and gets you back into Accra before the evening build up on the motorway.

Leaving at 9am is fine too, it simply compresses the day at the other end. What does not work is leaving after 11am, because the return leg then lands squarely in Accra rush hour.

Combining It

Akosombo pairs naturally with Boti Falls or with Somanya, both in the same direction, though doing two properly makes for a long day. If you want the dam, a boat cruise and a waterfall in one outing, plan on being out from 6:30am until well after dark, and say so when booking so the driver's hours are agreed up front.

What the Price Covers

$180 covers the round trip, the driver for the full day, the fuel, and the waiting time at every stop, in the BYD SUV. The Deepal Executive is $220 and the Sprinter, for groups up to ten, is $750.

Boat cruises, dam access where applicable, and food are not included, since those are paid on the day and vary by operator. Everything on our side is in the quoted price.
