Boti is the waterfall most people from Accra have heard of and fewer have actually done, largely because it is far enough out to need a proper day rather than a spare afternoon. It is about 130 km, past Koforidua, roughly two and a half hours each way depending on how the Aburi road is moving.
The Falls Themselves
Boti is a twin fall, two streams coming over the same rock face, and local tradition treats them as male and female. In the rainy season, roughly June through September, they run hard and the two merge at the base, which is when the falls are at their most impressive.
Come in the dry season and you will still see water, but noticeably less of it. If the waterfall is the entire reason for your trip, aim for the second half of the rainy season. If you are going for the day out, any time of year works.
The Steps Are Real
There is a staircase of about 250 steps down to the base of the falls, and the same staircase back up. It is not technical, but it is a genuine climb in Ghanaian heat and it catches people out, particularly on the return.
Take water, wear shoes you can actually walk in, and give yourself time at the bottom rather than rushing back up. If anyone in your group has knee or heart trouble, this is worth knowing before you commit to the drive.
Umbrella Rock and the Three Headed Palm
Within walking distance of the falls there is Umbrella Rock, a wide flat slab balanced on a narrower base, which you can climb onto for the view across the forest. The walk to it takes about 30 to 40 minutes each way through bush, with a guide from the site.
The three headed palm, a palm tree that splits into three separate crowns, is nearby and takes only a few minutes. Most visitors do the falls and one of the two, rather than all three, unless they have started early.
How the Day Runs
Leave Accra between 6:30am and 7am to get ahead of the Aburi road traffic. That puts you at Boti mid morning with the whole middle of the day for the falls and the walk to Umbrella Rock, and gets you back to Accra by early evening.
The road up through Aburi is scenic and slow. Coming back down in the dark is manageable but not enjoyable, which is the main argument for an early start.
What the Price Covers
$180 covers the round trip from anywhere in Accra, the driver for the full day, the fuel, and the waiting while you are at the falls, in the BYD SUV. The Deepal Executive is $220.
Park entry and the site guides are paid at Boti on the day and are not included, since the rates are set locally. There are no other charges from us: no mileage, no fuel surcharge, no extra for the waiting time.
