The canopy walk at Kakum National Park is one of those experiences that sounds mildly interesting when you read about it and then delivers completely when you're actually on it. Seven rope-and-plank suspension bridges, 30 metres above the floor of a West African tropical rainforest, 330 metres in total. The forest below is dense canopy. The sound is entirely birds and insects. On a clear morning, you can see for miles. If you have a fear of heights, you will know within the first 10 steps. Most people who start it finish it.
The Forest Below the Walk
Kakum protects one of the last significant fragments of tropical rainforest in southern Ghana. The park covers about 375 square kilometres and is home to forest elephants, bongo antelope, forest buffalo, and over 600 species of butterflies. Seeing large mammals requires early morning guided walks deeper into the park. The canopy walk is a separate, shorter experience. Both are worth doing if you have the time.
Birdwatching is excellent. The white-breasted guineafowl, African grey hornbill, and yellow-casqued wattled hornbill are regularly spotted from the canopy level. Birders who travel seriously to Ghana tend to rate Kakum highly.
Combining with Cape Coast
Cape Coast Castle is 30 minutes from the Kakum entrance. The standard approach is to do Kakum first in the early morning when it's cool and the forest is most active, then drive to Cape Coast for the castle tour in the late morning. Lunch in Cape Coast town, then begin the drive back to Accra in the early afternoon.
This makes for a long day. Leaving Accra at 6am, returning by 6 to 7pm. It is a worthwhile long day.
Practical Details
The canopy walk is guided. Entrance and guiding fees are paid at the park office. The walk fills up by late morning on weekends, so arrive early. Wear closed-toe shoes with grip. The wooden planks can be slick in humid conditions. Water and a light snack are worth bringing since the nearest food outside the park is back toward Cape Coast.
Your driver waits at the park entrance. There's a small craft market at the gate that tends to materialise when tour vehicles arrive.
