Kakum National Park is one of the most visited destinations in Ghana. The canopy walkway - a series of suspension bridges through the treetops of a tropical rainforest - is the headline experience. It's 330 metres long and sits 30 metres above the forest floor.
Beyond the canopy walk, the park offers guided nature walks, birdwatching, and the chance to see forest elephants (less common but possible with early morning visits).
Most visitors combine Kakum with Cape Coast Castle, which is 20 minutes away. The two together make a full and worthwhile day out of Accra.
Practical notes:
- Go early - the canopy walk gets busy by midday and the forest is cooler in the morning
- The guided walk is mandatory and lasts about 45 minutes
- Bring water and comfortable shoes
- Your driver can wait at the park entrance while you do the walk
The drive from Accra follows the same route as Cape Coast - via the N1 and along the coast. Leave by 6am to arrive at Kakum by 9am and beat the midday crowds.
