Ada Foah sits where the Volta River meets the Atlantic Ocean, and that geography produces something that the beaches closer to Accra can't replicate: calm, flat river water on one side and open ocean on the other, separated by sandbars that shift with the season. It's about 100km east of Accra, and it is, without question, the best day trip the city has to offer if you want water and a genuine change of pace.
Getting There
The drive takes 1.5 to 2 hours via the N2 east through Tema and along the coast road toward Ada. It is one of the more pleasant drives in the Greater Accra region. The road quality is good, the traffic dissipates quickly once you're past Tema, and the flat landscape opens up in a way that is calming after a few days in the city.
Leave Accra by 7am on a weekend and you'll arrive at Ada before 9am, ahead of most of the day visitors. Leave at 9am and you'll still have a full day with little issue on a weekday.
What to Do at Ada Foah
The most popular experience is a boat trip to the sandbar. Small motorised canoes take you from the main riverfront across to a sandbar in the estuary where you can swim in shallow, calm water with the Atlantic visible on the other side. It's one of those experiences that photographs absurdly well and is also genuinely enjoyable in person.
Dodi Island is further out and requires a longer boat trip. It has a small resort and a quieter beach. Kayaking and paddleboarding are available from several of the beach camps on the river side.
The resorts worth knowing: Manet Paradise on the river is probably the most established and has a reliable restaurant. Ada Estuary Hotel is quieter and further from the main boat traffic. Both charge a day use fee if you're not staying overnight.
Practical Notes
Most resort facilities require a day pass if you're a day visitor rather than a guest. This is usually $10 to $20 and covers use of the pool and beach. Book your boat trip at the main Ada Foah waterfront, not through the resort desk, and you'll pay less.
Bring cash. Reliable card machines are sparse outside the main resorts. Sunscreen, water shoes for the sandbar, and a change of clothes if you're planning to swim.
Book early for holiday weekends. Ada Foah during Easter, Christmas, and Detty December is a completely different experience, busy and festive, compared to a quiet Tuesday in February.
